Incan Agricultural Laboratory Exploration
This tour requires a medium level of fitness for someone who is not acclimatised to high altitude conditions. There are 2 moderately difficult climbs of short duration. EXTRA CAUTION must be taken on some of the Single Track.

Departure - 8:40AM from Macha Wasi.
You will be driven to the intersection where the road to Maras meets the road between Cusco and Urubamba. Riding will commence around 9:00AM towards the town of Maras which will be reached in less than 30 minutes.

In Maras you can view some of the well maintained colonial architecture before we continue onto Moray (Entry Fee: 5.50 Soles) which is approximately 7 kilometres from Maras.

After observing and inspecting the terraces of this unique agricultural laboratory of the Incas we will move onto Las Salineras (Entry Fee: 5.00 Soles), the Salt Mines of Maras, that have been used for hundreds of years by the local people and the Incas and are still in use today.

From Maras we will descend along some incredible Single Track to Las Salineras and Pinchogoto (small community where the inhabitants still use caves as part of their dwellings) on the floor of the Sacred Valley and return to Urubamba in time for you to take a shower and change clothes and/or have your lunch.

Urquillos Adventure
Departure - 9:30AM from Macha Wasi.
We will ride from Macha Wasi to Huayllabamba where we will cross the river and enter the valley of Urquillos.

This is a pleasant ride through farmland villages to the top of the valley where we can relax and chat for a while in a quiet location.

There are 2 or 3 short but challenging climbs on this route but otherwise it is of a level from Easy to Medium.

Returning by the same route, depending on your preference, you can enjoy a rapid or leisurely descent on our return to Urubamba.

Abra de Malaga Downhill & Ollantaytambo Exploration
Departure - 8:40AM from Hospedaje Macha Wasi.
We will be driven to Abra de Malaga and arrive there approximately 11AM.

After unloading the bikes and performing a final safety check we will embark on a thrilling descent using the same road we travelled on or via off-road trails and single-track including some old Inca trails that were also used for the Peruvian round of the Megavalanche Downhill competition. You will be witness to some fantastic views including some of the local Incan ruins.

The descent to Ollantaytambo will be achieved in approximately one hour or more depending on the number of photos you take.

In Ollantaytambo we will have lunch and afterwards we can explore the town and the incredible constructions, of the Incan architects and builders, surrounding this location.

Afterwards, if there is sufficient time we will ride through the farmlands of the valley floor back to Urubamba where you can enjoy a hot shower before selecting a restaurant to restore your energy. If there is insufficient time to return to Urubamba by bicycle before it gets dark we will return by bus or taxi.

Agricultural Landscapes & Incan Laboratory Exploration
This tour requires a medium level of fitness for someone who is not acclimatised to high altitude conditions. There is 1 strenuous climb of short duration early in the tour with 2 moderate climbs of short duration later in the tour. EXTRA CAUTION must be taken on some of the latter parts of this tour.

Departure - 8:20AM from Macha Wasi.
We will be driven to Chinchero and arrive there approximately 8:50AM.

After unloading the bikes and performing a final safety check, we will embark on our journey which will take us towards Lake Huaypo before beginning a challenging but short ascent which will give us spectacular views of the farmland and villages, we have just passed through, and the ever present mountains in the background.

We continue on our way descending through more villages and farmland before we reach an unpaved road, of good surface, that will take us close to the shores of Lake Huaypo where we may see crops of potatoes and corn in various stages of development.

After leaving the Lake behind us we will begin a gradual descent towards Maras where we will stop to have our lunch and you can still see many examples of the colonial architecture.

After lunch we continue onto Moray (Entry Fee: 5.50 Soles) which is approximately 7 kilometres from Maras. At Moray we can observe and inspect the terraces of this unique agricultural laboratory that was created within natural depressions in the landscape. This allowed the Incas to adapt plants to higher altitudes which in turn allowed a greater quantity of food to be produced to feed a growing empire.

Between Maras and Moray we will encounter some Single Track which will be enjoyed the most when returning to Maras as you are more often descending when travelling in this direction.

From Maras we will descend along some incredible Single Track to Las Salineras (Entry Fee: 5.00 Soles), the Salt Mines of Maras, that have been used for hundreds of years by the local people and the Incas and are still in use today. After inspecting the Salt Pans we continue our descent to Pinchogoto (small community where the inhabitants still use caves as part of their dwellings) on the floor of the Sacred Valley and return to Urubamba where you can enjoy a hot shower before selecting a restaurant to restore your energy.

Chinchero Highlands Challenge
Departure - 7:45AM from Macha Wasi.
We will be driven to Corao and arrive there approximately 8:30AM.

After unloading the bikes and performing a final safety check, we will embark on an ascent of approximately 450 metres, passing through Quechua farmland and villages, to reach the first pass of 4000 metres, after approximately 12 kilometres, giving you spectacular views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. A short distance further from this pass will allow you more views of the valley including Pisac.

From this vantage point you can also see the village of Patabamba, a few kilometres further on in our direction of travel, where we may be able to see some of the best examples of Andean textiles being fabricated. Approaching Patabamba we will gain some speed as we descend to about 3800 metres.

After Patabamba we will pass through another Quechua village with a long tradition of textile production, named Quenco, from where we will start our second major ascent to 4200 metres into more amazing scenery before descending to pass through more villages and by Laguna Piuray and into Chinchero for a well deserved lunch.

After lunch we can visit the Inca ruins of Chinchero to allow our meal some time to digest before we continue on to Urubamba following the route of the Agricultural Landscapes & Incan Laboratory Exploration tour.

MORAY
Moray, located approximately 20 kms by road and/or trail from Urubamba and approximately 60 kms from Cusco, is a group of concentric terraces, adapted from naturally formed depressions, whose warmest level is at the bottom. The variation in temperature, between the lowest and highest terraces, was found by Prof. John Earls to reach as much as 15 degrees celsius. The varying micro climates, provided by the location and terracing, allowed the Incas to slowly adapt more than 250 varieties of plants, from different climates and altitudes, to the climate and altitudes of the Sacred Valley. This laboratory allowed the cultivation of corn and other crops at high altitudes which contributed greatly to the development of Andean civilisations and the economic development and expansion of the Incan Empire.

Moray is a popular stopping place, en route, for Mountain Bike Tours between Chinchero and Urubamba. We can organise half day or full day tours that include Moray.

In early September, local people visit Moray to celebrate the Moray Raymi or the Sun's Party. Images

La variación en la temperatura, entre las terrazas más bajas y más altas, fue encontrada por Prof. John Earls para alcanzar tanto como 15 grados Celsius. Los climas micro variantes, proporcionados por la posición y terrazas, permitieron que los incas adaptaran despacio más de 250 variedades de plantas, de climas diferentes y altitudes, al clima y altitudes del Valle Sagrado.
